Biological sciences is the study of life and living organisms, their life cycles, adaptations and environment. At Dartmouth biology, you’ll find diverse disciplines, prestigious faculty with a breadth of experience in biological processes, and next-generation resources and equipment. Our authors and readers reflect a broad interdisciplinary group of scientists who study molecular, cellular and organismal physiology in an evolutionary and environmental context. In neurobiology you will concentrate solely on the nervous system, often focusing on the brain, with the goal of developing treatments for both psychiatric and neurological ailments, and contributing to the advancement of knowledge of the most complex and least understood part of the human body.
Biology has evolved as a field of science since it was first studied in ancient civilizations, although modern biology is a relatively recent field. Learn about animals, plants, evolution, the tree of life, ecology, cells, genetics, fields of biology and more. Organismic biologists came through the period of the ‘molecular wars’ intact, rallying around Dobzhansky’s oft-heard assertion that ‘nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution’ (Smocovitis, 1996).
We are committed to providing students with a broad exposure to biological processes and systems and a deep understanding of biology at environmental, organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. The options system in the second and third years allows students to study either a general background encompassing a comprehensive range of topics, or specialise in detailed aspects of animals, plants, cells or ecology.
NEON will enable new discoveries and collaborations in the field of ecology of and beyond. With excellent communication skills and the ability to convey scientific concepts to a non-scientific audience, biology graduates can find a suitable place in a wide range of fulfilling jobs including press officer, journalist, presenter, teacher, policy campaigner and science writer. Biology students will have a good base to move into medicine, and many go into research laboratories, or the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
Our faculty members are world-class researchers and teachers who share an excitement for the life sciences. The course now incorporates an optional fourth year, meaning students can either leave after three years with a BA or choose to stay on and complete an extended project under the supervision of an academic member of staff (which can be lab or field-based), in addition to advanced research skills training.
That’s why we have an active internship program that puts students in hospitals, labs, museums, agencies and businesses related to biology. These annual fees are for full-time students who begin this undergraduate course here in 2020. Our faculty, research scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students are exploring everything from ecosystems to microbiology and developmental biology; evolution to cell biology; molecular biology to systems biology, bioinformatics, and genomics.
The term biology comes from the Greek βίος (bios), meaning life” and from the Greek λογία (logia), meaning study of”. While more than a third of Oxford biology graduates go on to further study such as a research doctorate or postgraduate course in an applied field, over half embark on a professional career after graduating in areas as diverse as conservation, industry, finance, medicine, media, teaching or the law.
